Since a conservative takeover of the Oley Valley School Board in 2021, the district has faced a barrage of controversies highlighting political extremism. Early tensions arose when board members employed homophobic and transphobic language against proposed anti-discrimination policies. A significant outcry followed the board’s decision to sever ties with the American Red Cross, driven by a right-wing conspiracy about immigration.
Stark reminders of past intolerance surfaced when a garage door of a newly appointed board member displayed a faded swastika and the phrase "Heil Hitler." Although she initially offered to resign, she later reversed that decision.
