Republicans Seek Supreme Court Review of Pennsylvania’s ‘Naked Ballot’ Voting Decision

Republicans Urge Supreme Court to Intervene in Pennsylvania Voting Dispute

By John Fritze and Tierney Sneed, CNN

In a significant legal maneuver ahead of the upcoming elections, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has called on the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a dispute regarding provisional ballots in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state. The appeal, filed Monday, seeks to overturn a state court ruling that permits voters to cast provisional ballots even when their mail-in ballots lack a required “secrecy” envelope, resulting in what are known as “naked ballots.”

The RNC argues that allowing such ballots could impact tens of thousands of votes in a state critical for both the 2024 presidential race and the control of the U.S. Senate. They emphasized the urgency of the case, asserting its importance for the electoral process in an upcoming election that may hinge on Pennsylvania’s outcomes.

This case emerged shortly after Virginia requested the Supreme Court’s approval to continue its efforts to purge suspected noncitizens from voter rolls, highlighting a busy period for the high court concerning voting-related matters. Both cases are expected to be addressed swiftly, with rulings potentially arriving within days, which is notably rapid for the Supreme Court’s typical timelines.

The RNC has requested that the Supreme Court render its decision by Friday, emphasizing the pressing nature of the dispute within the broader context of electoral integrity and participation.

As the election approaches, these legal challenges underscore the intensified battle over voting rights and regulations, with implications that could significantly influence the political landscape in the coming months.
