A man from Mifflin County was caught with a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag at the State College Regional Airport security checkpoint on Tuesday, prompting airport officials to notify police. The Transportation Security Administration officers found a .357 caliber firearm with five bullets during screening. The man, who remains unidentified, was allowed to leave the airport with his firearm but faces a maximum fine of $15,000.
This incident marks the second firearm intercepted at the airport in recent weeks, with a 9mm handgun loaded with nine bullets being found in a backpack belonging to a man from Luzerne County in September. TSA Acting Federal Security Director Donald Weston emphasized the seriousness of bringing loaded guns to checkpoints, stating that the offender can expect a substantial federal fine.
Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms as long as they are unloaded, securely locked in a hard-side case, and placed in checked baggage. The case must be declared at the check-in counter regardless of possessing a concealed carry permit. TSA rules prohibit firearms in carry-on bags to ensure the safety of all passengers.
Weston expressed disappointment at the recurring incidents of travelers bringing guns to security checkpoints, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and adherence to TSA regulations. The importance of strict compliance with firearm transportation guidelines cannot be overstated to prevent security threats and ensure the safety of all passengers.
