What do you know about the Delphi murders? Richard Allen faces trial for 2017 deaths

Richard Allen, 52, is finally facing trial nearly eight years after the murders of teenagers Liberty “Libby” German and Abigail “Abby” Williams in Delphi, Indiana. The trial, expected to run until Nov. 15, has faced multiple delays and reschedulings. The case, known as the Delphi Murders, has captured public interest due to the evidence captured on one victim’s phone, including photos and videos of the suspect, and rumors of cult involvement.

German and Williams were last seen alive on February 13, 2017, near Monon High Bridge, and were later found dead on the north bank of Deer Creek. Photos and videos found on German’s phone helped police identify the suspect, who was seen in a grainy image and heard on audio saying, “Down the hill.” The case remained unsolved for years, with multiple suspects interviewed before Allen’s arrest in 2022.

Allen, who lived near the bridge where the girls were killed, was initially charged with kidnapping and two counts of murder. Prosecutors requested to add additional kidnapping charges but later dropped them. Allen’s trial has been delayed several times and is currently scheduled for Oct. 14 through Nov. 15. His defense team claims the murders were part of a “ritualistic sacrifice” by a white nationalist cult, but the judge has barred mentions of this in court.

German and Williams were both eighth graders at Delphi Community Middle School and avid softball players. The community has honored them by naming a softball park after them. The trial of Allen brings hope for justice for the families of the victims and the community of Delphi.
