Republican congressmen file lawsuit against Pennsylvania officials regarding military and overseas ballots.

Six Pennsylvania Republican congressmen are suing the state’s secretary of state for allegedly not properly vetting the identities of overseas and military voters. They are challenging the exemption of certain citizens from voter identification requirements, claiming it could lead to election fraud. The congressmen want Pennsylvania to segregate and refrain from counting ballots from these voters until additional eligibility checks are done.

The lawsuit, filed in collaboration with the group PA Fair Elections, is led by Heather Honey, who has made claims similar to former President Donald Trump regarding the 2020 election outcome. The state department has criticized the lawsuit as an attempt to disenfranchise voters, especially those serving in the military who are putting their lives on the line to defend freedoms.

The legal challenge centers around voters covered by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, who are exempt from the standard identification requirements for absentee ballots in Pennsylvania. The congressmen argue that this policy violates federal standards and makes the state’s elections vulnerable to ineligible votes, potentially allowing foreign nations to interfere.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, election officials have already mailed out thousands of ballots to overseas and military voters. The state department maintains that ineligible voting is rare and the state has measures in place to investigate and prosecute such cases. The lawsuit is seen as an extension of the unfounded challenges against the 2020 election results in Pennsylvania.
