American skier Michael Gardner, 32, has died in a mountain climbing accident in Nepal while attempting a new route with his longtime climbing partner, Sam Hennessey. Gardner fell to his death in Nepal’s Kangchenjunga region while climbing the North Face of Jannu East. Hennessey, who successfully descended the route, was accompanied by a French team who searched for Gardner’s body but only found some of his belongings. This was Hennessey’s third attempt climbing the north face of Jannu East and his second attempt with Gardner.
Gardner, a second generation mountain guide from Ridgway, Colorado, learned from his father but tragically lost him in a climbing accident in 2008. Described as a “true climber’s climber,” Gardner was known for his speed climbing rock walls and mountain peaks. He was known for his passion for various sports and activities and his willingness to share his adventures with others.
Gardner is survived by his mother and sister, and is remembered as a curious and loving person who was always eager to engage with others. He was described as someone who pushed the boundaries of sport with ethics, style, and a homage to those who came before him. Despite his accomplishments, he remained humble and focused on the joy of sharing his adventures with others.
