The Irvine Police Department in California has announced that they will be adding a Tesla Cybertruck to their force, to be used for community outreach and educational programs such as the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program. The department stated that the unique vehicle will help engage with the community and promote positive interactions, as they have done in the past with other unconventional methods such as officers on horseback or with K9 support. The Cybertruck, which retails for $95,000 or more, will not be used for traditional law enforcement duties such as traffic stops. The department believes in continual education for students and is one of only two DARE programs in the state. This move is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to connect with the community and promote engagement with young people in Irvine. The USA TODAY reached out to the Irvine Police Department for comment on the new vehicle. Email reporter Ahjané Forbes at aforbes@gannett.com for more information.
