Incumbent Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor is facing four challengers in the upcoming Nov. 5 election. DeFoor, a Republican, has focused on monitoring how public dollars are spent to catch waste, fraud, and graft. He has stuck to the office’s required functions and tackled controversial issues, like auditing former Gov. Tom Wolf’s pandemic waivers and school districts’ tax practices. DeFoor’s second-term priorities include ensuring that the job gets done in a nonpartisan way. He has received endorsements from various organizations, including the Pennsylvania Republican Party and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry.
DeFoor, a Dauphin County native, has an extensive background in investigations and auditing, having served as a special agent for the state attorney general’s office and as Dauphin County controller. He is the first person of color to win a state row office in Pennsylvania and the first Republican to hold the auditor general position since 1997.
DeFoor’s challenger include Democratic state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, Alan “Bob” Goodrich of the Constitution Party, Libertarian Reece Smith, and the American Solidarity Party’s Eric K. Anton. The election comes at a time of heightened skepticism about election integrity, with DeFoor having stated his belief that his own election was fair.
DeFoor’s campaign priorities for a second term include continuing to monitor public spending and ensuring accountability in how state money is handled. His endorsements and background in auditing and investigations make him a strong candidate for reelection as Pennsylvania auditor general.
