A recent poll conducted by the MassINC Polling Group revealed that the main aspects of the Democratic policy agenda in Pennsylvania are popular among voters. The Democratic Party currently holds a slim majority in the state House with 102 seats to Republicans’ 101, and maintaining this majority is crucial for advancing Governor Josh Shapiro’s agenda and blocking GOP-favored constitutional amendments.
Key points of the Democratic agenda include expanding universal background checks for guns, discrimination protections based on sexual orientation, and raising the minimum wage to $15. The poll asked 800 likely voters about their approval of these policies, with 63% expressing support for the agenda.
While less than two dozen districts are considered competitive in the upcoming election, localized issues and individual legislators’ stances can have a significant impact on the outcome. Some Republicans in swing districts have also supported Democratic policies, reflecting the diverse views within the state.
Nevertheless, political attacks have focused on issues such as abortion and criminal justice, with conservative PACs targeting vulnerable Democrats on specific legislative proposals. The poll also highlighted the importance of abortion as a top issue for voters, while Republicans have emphasized crime as a key concern.
Overall, the battle for control of the Pennsylvania House remains competitive, with candidates navigating a complex political landscape shaped by differing policy priorities and voter perceptions. The outcome of the November election will determine the future direction of the state’s legislative agenda.
