Florida governor warns that ‘major impacts’ are inevitable as new storm develops

Tropical Storm Milton is currently off the coast of Mexico but is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane before hitting the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast by midweek. The storm is projected to bring life-threatening hazards to portions of the Florida west coast and residents are urged to prepare for potential mandatory evacuations. Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 35 counties and anticipates significant impacts. The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring Milton’s progress and is advising residents to have a hurricane preparedness plan in place. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell is defending the agency’s response to Hurricane Helene and ensuring preparations are in place for Milton’s landfall. Meanwhile, Hurricane Kirk has diminished to a Category 2 hurricane in the Atlantic, posing risks to Bermuda and the U.S. and Canadian coasts, while Hurricane Leslie is moving northwest with no threats to land. As the Atlantic hurricane season intensifies, the southeastern U.S. continues to grapple with the aftermath of destructive storms, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of potential disasters.
