FEMA Director Deanne Criswell disputes Trump’s statements about Hurricane Helene

President Joe Biden’s administration is facing scrutiny from former President Donald Trump regarding the federal response to Hurricane Helene, which caused significant damage in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and other states. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell defended FEMA’s response and refuted Trump’s claims that disaster relief funds were being diverted to undocumented immigrants or withheld from Republican areas. Criswell emphasized that state and local officials have dismissed these narratives as false and harmful.

Trump has made unfounded claims about FEMA’s response to the hurricane, including accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of using FEMA funds to help illegal immigrants. However, FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program, which aids noncitizen migrants, has separate funding from disaster relief funds. The White House reiterated that no money was being diverted from disaster response needs.

The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that FEMA has enough funding to address immediate needs but may require additional funds for future storms. Congress recently appropriated $20 billion in disaster funds, but Biden has expressed the need for more funding to support recovery and relief efforts. Despite Republican criticisms, individuals affected by Hurricane Helene have expressed the need for more assistance, including the $750 Serious Needs Assistance provided by FEMA. Lara Trump defended the criticism of FEMA’s response, emphasizing that it was coming directly from individuals impacted by the hurricane.
