Typhoon Krathon Forces Taiwan to Shut Down in Southwest as it Approaches | Weather News

Taiwan is bracing for the arrival of Typhoon Krathon, which is expected to hit the southwestern city of Kaohsiung. The storm, with wind speeds of up to 130mph, has already brought heavy rain and strong winds to the area. Authorities have shut down offices and schools, evacuated thousands of people, and cancelled flights and ferry services in preparation for the typhoon.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai has warned residents to stay indoors and avoid flood- and landslide-prone areas. The city is preparing for up to 31 inches of rain in surrounding mountainous regions. The storm is expected to be as powerful as Typhoon Thelma, which devastated the city in 1977.

All cities and counties in Taiwan declared a day off on Wednesday, and nearly 10,000 people have been evacuated from at-risk areas. The Ministry of Defence has put 40,000 troops on standby to assist with any relief efforts. The typhoon has brought back memories of previous devastating storms for some residents, who are rushing to stock up on essentials in preparation.

Typhoons are common in the Asia Pacific region, but a recent study showed that they are becoming more intense and lasting longer over land due to climate change. Krathon has already caused damage in the Philippines, where one person has been reported dead and thousands have been displaced.

As Taiwan braces for the impact of Typhoon Krathon, residents and authorities are working together to prepare for the storm and mitigate its effects.
