Iran launched a massive ballistic missile attack on Israel in retaliation for civilian deaths in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as assassinations of key leaders. The attack targeted military bases in Tel Aviv, using advanced hypersonic missiles. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised retaliation, with the US pledging support.
As tensions rise, both nations’ military capabilities are compared. Iran has a larger military force of 610,000 active personnel and $10.3 billion in military spending, with significant ground forces, air force, and navy assets. Israel has 169,500 active personnel and spent $27.5 billion in 2023, with a smaller but technologically advanced military.
Israel’s air defense system, the Iron Dome, proved effective in intercepting Iran’s missiles. The country also has additional systems like David’s Sling and the Arrow System. Iran, on the other hand, has a range of air defense systems and various surface-to-air missile defenses.
Both countries possess a variety of ballistic missiles, with Israel believed to have nuclear warheads while Iran is thought to have an advanced nuclear program but no current nuclear weapons. Despite Isreal’s technological advantage, the conflict highlights the potential for a dangerous escalation between the long-time foes.
