President Joe Biden has approved the deployment of up to 1,000 active-duty Army personnel to reinforce the North Carolina National Guard in response to the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. Biden stated that these soldiers will help deliver life-saving supplies to isolated communities in North Carolina and they have the logistical capabilities to do so quickly. The soldiers will join the National Guard members already activated by Gov. Roy Cooper. Biden is visiting North Carolina and South Carolina to meet with flood victims and survey the damage caused by the hurricane. The soldiers will come from a task force stationed at Fort Liberty in North Carolina and will utilize helicopters and high-wheeled vehicles to provide aid to areas not accessible by road. The Defense Department has activated helicopters for search and rescue operations and provided high-water vehicles for assistance. FEMA has distributed millions of meals, liters of water, generators, and tarps as part of the hurricane response. Vice President Kamala Harris is also touring storm damage in Georgia and will visit North Carolina soon. Biden will be making separate trips to Georgia and Florida later in the week.
