Cybersecurity incident leads to suspension of WiFi at major UK train stations | UK news

Several train stations across the UK have had their wifi networks suspended following a cybersecurity incident. Nineteen stations, including London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly, and Birmingham New Street, were affected by the incident, which led to the wifi services being down on Wednesday night and still not restored on Thursday morning.

Passengers accessing the wifi at Piccadilly station were redirected to a webpage with Islamophobic messages and details of terrorist attacks in the UK and Europe. The wifi services at these stations are provided by a third party and have been suspended while an investigation is ongoing.

Telent, the company responsible for providing wifi services for Network Rail, stated they were aware of the security incident and working with Network Rail on the investigation. In London, major stations like King’s Cross, London Bridge, and Waterloo were also affected.

This incident follows a cyber-attack on Transport for London earlier this month, which potentially breached thousands of customers’ details. A teenager from Walsall was arrested in connection with the TfL hack, with the National Crime Agency confirming his detention on suspicion of offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990.

TfL has been contacting about 5,000 customers as a precaution, warning them that their email and bank account details could have been accessed. As of now, there is no set date for when passenger journey and live travel data will be accessible again. TfL assures customers that once it is available, they will be able to see their full journey history and correct any incomplete journeys or maximum fares.
