Travis James Mullis was executed in Texas for killing his infant son Alijah in 2008. Mullis was the fourth inmate executed in Texas this year and the 16th in the nation. He was convicted of molesting, stomping, and abandoning his son at a tourist destination in Galveston. Mullis said he reached a breaking point when the baby wouldn’t stop crying. Before his execution, Mullis thanked loved ones and expressed regret for killing his son. His lawyer claimed Mullis had redeemed himself during his time on death row. The prosecution stated that justice was finally served for Alijah. Alijah’s grandmother described him as an extraordinarily beautiful baby. Mullis had a history of abuse and had hit his breaking point due to financial and personal stress. He confessed to the crime four days later and was sentenced to death in 2011. Mullis’ execution came amidst questions surrounding another inmate’s guilt, Marcellus Williams. Mullis is one of five inmates scheduled for execution within a six-day period. This case is a tragic example of the extreme consequences of violence and abuse against innocent children.
