A recent poll conducted by Spotlight PA revealed that abortion is a top issue for nearly 50% of Pennsylvania voters when considering who to pick for president in November. The poll showed that feelings on abortion vary widely by party, with 85% of Democrats identifying it as an important issue compared to only 17% of Republicans. Interestingly, 49% of independent voters also picked abortion as a top issue. This makes them a critical group in a state where the outcome is expected to be decided by a slim margin.
The poll, which surveyed 800 likely voters, found that abortion ranked below the economy, the future of democracy, immigration policy, and gun policy as important issues. Kamala Harris’ campaign has centered its messaging on protecting abortion access and reproductive rights, while Donald Trump has tried to deflect attention from his record on the issue.
In Pennsylvania, where pregnancies can be ended up to 24 weeks gestation, Republican state lawmakers have advanced measures targeting abortion access. Democrats have used abortion access as a key campaign issue in their push to control the state House and flip the state Senate. The issue has particular salience among independent women, with 60% of women unaffiliated with a major party identifying abortion as a top issue.
The poll also found that age, race, income, and education level correlate with voters’ focus on abortion this election cycle. Overall, the issue of abortion has become a central point of discussion in the Pennsylvania electoral landscape, as voters weigh their choices for the upcoming presidential election.
