A survey conducted by Stop AAPI Hate and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago found that 49% of Asian Americans were victims of hate acts in the U.S. in 2023, highlighting pervasive levels of discrimination that often go unreported. Despite a wave of high-profile hate crimes at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-Asian racism continues to affect the community in various settings such as workplaces, schools, and public spaces. The report, released with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, sheds light on the impact of discrimination and the concerns of Asian Americans regarding the racial climate in the U.S.
The survey also reveals a shift in rhetoric fueling anti-Asian hate, from pandemic-related accusations to more general xenophobic and anti-immigrant sentiments. Additionally, the report shows that hate incidents are not limited to individual attacks but also include institutional discrimination, impacting areas like business, work, housing, healthcare, education, and government settings. The survey aims to provide a comprehensive view of racism against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, including both criminal and non-criminal acts.
In response to the rise in hate incidents, Asian American communities have taken action to resist racism, including educating others, attending protests, engaging with lawmakers, and donating to racial justice organizations. Despite challenges such as lack of reporting to law enforcement, language barriers, and fear of retaliation, the survey highlights a growing effort within the community to combat hate and discrimination. Stop AAPI Hate plans to conduct the survey annually to track trends and raise awareness of the ongoing issue of anti-Asian racism in the U.S.
