Real Madrid has automatically qualified for the final of the first annual FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Doha, Qatar. The competition, featuring club teams from around the world, will culminate in the final on December 18, coinciding with Qatar’s National Day and the two-year anniversary of the 2022 World Cup final. This tournament replaces the annual Club World Cup and will be held every four years with 32 teams starting from 2025.
The Minister for Youth and Sports in Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, expressed pride in hosting the prestigious event following the success of the 2022 World Cup. The final will take place at the Khalifa International Stadium, which previously hosted the World Cup and the AFC Cup.
Real Madrid will headline as the European Champions League winners, while other regional champions will compete in regional playoffs leading up to the final. Asian Champions League winners Al Ain will face Oceanic Champions League winners Auckland City, with the winners meeting African Champions League winners Al Ahly before the final.
The tournament will showcase top players from around the world, with the South American Libertadores winners playing Mexican side Pachuca in a match dubbed the “Derby of the Americas” before the final. The Intercontinental Cup Final on December 18 will feature the winners of these matches against Real Madrid, providing an exciting conclusion to the inaugural event.
