Five children were tragically killed in a targeted airstrike by Israeli jets in southern Beirut, Lebanon. The strike occurred during rush hour in the Haret Hreik neighborhood, resulting in the destruction of a building near the al-Qaem mosque. The attack left rubble, burned-out cars, and billowing smoke in its wake, with more casualties expected as paramedics arrived at the scene.
This strike marks the third time Beirut has been targeted by Israeli airstrikes since fighting between Hezbollah and Israel began on October 8th. The attack comes in the wake of a wide-ranging assault that injured over 3,000 people and left at least 42 dead. While Hezbollah and Lebanon have accused Israel of the attack, Israel has not commented on the operation.
The Israeli military described the strike as a “targeted airstrike” and confirmed that there had been “no change in the home front command’s instructions.” The strike has raised tensions in the region, with further conflict feared. The UK is now evaluating contingency plans for evacuating Britons from Lebanon, with officials trying to prevent chaos similar to what occurred during the evacuation of Afghanistan in 2021. The UK has urged British nationals to leave Lebanon while commercial options remain open due to the escalating violence.
