A tourist couple in their 60s drove their vehicle into the water at an Isle of Palms Marina in South Carolina after being confused by GPS directions. Restaurant employees at Islander 71 Seafood restaurant and bar rescued the couple from their sinking vehicle. The Isle of Palms Police Department closed the boat ramp until the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office’s Dive Team could recover the vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries or environmental impacts were reported. Bartender Johnny Himmelsbach, a former lifeguard, was credited with saving the couple, with another employee assisting in the rescue. Coworkers described Himmelsbach’s actions as heroic and expressed gratitude that the situation did not end in tragedy. The Isle of Palms Police Department was contacted for more information on the incident. The confusion over GPS directions led to the couple driving onto the ramp after having dinner at the restaurant, highlighting the importance of proper navigation and clear directions to prevent such accidents.
