Ryan W Routh, a 58-year-old man suspected of planning to assassinate Donald Trump, has been charged with two gun-related crimes in federal court. He was spotted with a rifle on the perimeter of the former president’s golf course in Florida, where he may have been lying in wait for nearly 12 hours according to court documents. Despite never firing any shots and never having Trump in his line of sight, the FBI is investigating the incident as an assassination attempt.
Routh was arrested after fleeing the scene and is being held on charges of illegally possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He was apprehended by law enforcement agents on a nearby highway following the incident.
The incident marks the second assassination attempt on Trump in just two months, raising questions about the security measures in place to protect the former president. Trump is scheduled to unveil a new cryptocurrency business before resuming his campaign events.
Authorities are investigating how Routh knew of Trump’s golfing plans, with the Secret Service coming under scrutiny for the handling of previous attempts on Trump’s life. Trump has thanked law enforcement for their response and blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the attempted assassination.
Routh, who has previous felony convictions in North Carolina, has shown support for Ukraine in his social media posts. The FBI is searching through his social media accounts for clues about his alleged planning and motive for wanting to kill the president. Ukrainian officials and the International Legion have distanced themselves from Routh, emphasizing that he has no affiliation with them.
