Open House Scheduled for Central Pennsylvania Bridge Rehabilitation Project on Tuesday

PennDOT has announced a project to rehabilitate the Route 462 Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge connecting York and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania. The project aims to improve mobility and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians while addressing structural deficiencies on the bridge. An in-person open house is scheduled for September 17th at the Columbia Market House in Columbia, PA, with an online public plan display available for those unable to attend.

The project includes improvements such as adding wayfinding signs and pavement markings for cyclists and pedestrians accessing nearby trails, constructing a roundabout at a key intersection, and providing lighting enhancements for traveler safety. The project, initially scheduled to begin construction in 2024, has been delayed due to unforeseen structural deficiencies. An interim repairs project is currently underway to keep the bridge open while more extensive rehabilitation work is planned.

The major bridge rehabilitation is expected to result in a three-year closure for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians within a five-year construction project timeframe. Alternative transportation routes and accommodations will be provided during the closure. The project is currently in the preliminary design phase, and public input is welcome through the online plan display and open house to address any questions or concerns.

PennDOT emphasizes its commitment to non-discrimination and equal access to its programs and activities, encouraging individuals with special needs or concerns to contact the project manager for assistance. The project is subject to environmental evaluations and funding availability, with construction anticipated to take place between 2027 and 2031.
