Becoming a Poll Worker in Pennsylvania: A Step-by-Step Guide from Spotlight PA

Pennsylvania is currently recruiting poll workers for the 2024 general election, which will take place on Nov. 5 at approximately 9,000 voting locations across the state. Poll workers play a crucial role in ensuring that the election runs smoothly and that voters are able to exercise their democratic right.

To become a poll worker, individuals must be registered voters in the county in which they live. High school students who are 17-year-old juniors or seniors may also be eligible to volunteer as student poll workers with the proper permissions. Poll workers cannot be current government employees or officials, nor can they be candidates on the ballot.

On Election Day, poll workers help with setting up, opening, and closing polling places, checking in voters, and assisting with election equipment. Specialized positions, such as machine operators, are appointed to support the local election board. All poll workers are required to attend mandatory training sessions before Election Day.

Poll workers are compensated with a minimum pay of $75 a day, with the possibility of earning up to $200 depending on the county. Additional compensation may be available for attending certain training events.

Those interested in becoming poll workers can apply through the Pennsylvania Department of State’s website or their county’s election website. The application asks for basic contact information, residency details, and any special skills that may aid in the role. If chosen, individuals will be contacted by their county’s election office.

The deadline to apply is ongoing, so interested individuals are encouraged to submit their applications sooner rather than later. By becoming a poll worker, individuals have the opportunity to serve their community, learn about Pennsylvania elections, and earn compensation for their time and efforts.
