Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of shooting at Donald Trump, has a lengthy history in North Carolina where he had multiple run-ins with law enforcement. Routh, 58, was convicted in 2002 of possessing a weapon of mass destruction while living in Greensboro. After moving to Hawaii in 2018, he operated a company building sheds with his son.
Routh was known for his social media posts about the war in Ukraine and even sought to recruit volunteers to join the fight against the Russian invasion in Kyiv. While initially supporting Trump and Tulsi Gabbard, his posts in recent years indicated his support for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. He made small donations totaling $140 to ActBlue, a political action committee supporting Democratic candidates, since 2019.
After the assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, Routh urged Biden and Harris to visit the wounded and attend the funeral of a former fire chief killed at the rally. Voter records show he registered as an unaffiliated voter in North Carolina in 2012 and most recently voted in the state’s Democratic Party primary in March 2024.
His online presence and political activities shed light on his shifting political allegiances over the years. The incident involving the shooting at Trump highlights the potential dangers of radicalization and extremism in today’s political climate.
