Time-lapse video captures solar arrays reflecting auroras and city lights

Astronaut Matthew Dominick shared stunning footage taken from the International Space Station, showing reflections of auroras and city lights on Earth. The time-lapse video captured the wave of aligned reflections ahead of sunrise, as well as the main belt of the Milky Way in the distance. Dominick stayed up late to capture the solar array light reflections, setting up multiple time-lapse videos to find the right lighting. A team scanned thousands of still images to piece together the most compelling shots, as a still image could not fully capture the beauty of the reflections.

In a separate video, Dominick captured what appears to be a meteor explosion, also known as a bolide. The clip shows something bright streaking and exploding in one frame per second, disappearing from view. The time-lapse was set up over northern Africa, amidst dark conditions with lightning, in an effort to capture the Milky Way Core. Dominick expressed curiosity about the meteor and welcomed any additional information about these types of events.

Overall, Dominick’s videos showcase the unique perspectives and experiences that astronauts have while aboard the International Space Station, providing breathtaking views of Earth and celestial events.
