67 drones launched by Russia in overnight attack on Ukraine, reports say

On September 7, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 67 long-range Shahed drones in a mass overnight attack, with 58 of them being shot down. Air defense units in 11 regions across Ukraine were activated in response to the attack. Debris from the drones was found near the parliament building in Kyiv, a heavily defended area that also houses government offices.

The images shared on Telegram showed several pieces of drone debris scattered near the parliament building, indicating the extent of the attack. Since the start of the invasion in February 2022, Russia has consistently used Shahed drones as a cost-effective alternative to missiles. These drones fly low and emit less heat, making them difficult for traditional air defense systems to detect.

The drones were launched from border regions in Russia and from the Russian-occupied Crimea peninsula. This incident in Kyiv underscores the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Moscow continuing to launch missiles and drones into Ukrainian territory. The attack in the capital city also highlights the vulnerability of even well-defended areas to such drone strikes. Residents of Kyiv were awakened by explosions in the early hours of the morning, signaling the intensity of the attack.
