A 16-year-old Maryland high school student shot and killed a 15-year-old classmate at Joppatowne High School on Friday, just two days after a Georgia school shooting left four victims dead. The assailant fired a single shot at Warren Curtis Grant in a men’s bathroom. Warren was treated by school nurses and the principal but later died at a trauma center. The suspect has not been charged yet, and the firearm used has not been recovered. The school community is mourning the loss and offering support to the victim’s family and friends.
The teenage suspect had been involved in 10 previous incidents since 2022. Although this was his first day at Joppatowne High School, he had a history with law enforcement. Police have not been allowed to talk to him due to laws in Maryland, but there is enough evidence to file charges. The suspect is expected to be officially charged by early Saturday.
The Maryland shooting occurred just days after a school shooting in Georgia that left two teachers and two students dead. The shooter, a 14-year-old boy armed with an AR-platform style weapon, faces four counts of felony murder. Authorities in both states are dealing with the tragic consequences of these violent incidents. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler commented on the similarities between the two shootings and the impact they have had on their respective communities.
