A couple in Alaska, James and Bill Montiver, lost their home in a devastating landslide that also took the lives of their two dogs. Despite surviving the collapse of their three-story house, the couple mourned the loss of their pets for a week. However, a geologist heard whimpering from the debris and initiated a search and rescue mission. Fire crews eventually located the dogs, Alani and Cassie, alive and well. The reunited family expressed deep gratitude to the first responders and everyone involved in the effort.
James Montiver, who suffered injuries during the landslide, expressed disbelief and relief at having his beloved pets back. The landslide, which caused significant damage to roads and led to evacuations, affected multiple lives in Ketchikan. Mayor Dave Kiffer described the event as unprecedented in his 65 years in the city, expressing heartbreak over the loss of life and property.
The couple shared that they had made private goodbyes to their dogs, believing they hadn’t survived. The sound of the landslide convinced Bill that a plane was crashing into their home. The Montivers were thankful for the safety measures in their home, such as hiding behind a Bosch dishwasher, which potentially saved Bill’s life. Amid the devastation, community support and efforts in reuniting the Montivers with their pets were a source of hope and gratitude in the face of tragedy.
