Bobi Wine, Ugandan opposition leader, discharged from hospital | Political Updates

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was discharged from the hospital after being hit in the leg with a tear-gas canister during a confrontation with police. Wine had surgery to remove fragments from the canister, according to Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago. Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, accused the police of targeting him and called it an attempt on his life. Wine has been a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, challenging him in the 2021 election, and has faced numerous instances of house arrest and crackdowns on his party rallies. Wine’s lawyer, George Musisi, stated that police fired the tear-gas canister indiscriminately at Wine during a meeting with supporters in Bulindo. The NUP spokesperson requested Wine be discharged from the hospital due to concerns about undercover operatives trying to access his room. Police claimed they were trying to stop Wine from marching down a road, leading to the altercation. The police have promised to conduct an investigation into the incident. This incident is the latest in a series of crackdowns on opposition voices in Uganda, including arrests during anti-corruption rallies and protests against a major oil project.
