Map highlights the top hazardous cities in the U.S. for drivers

A trucker in the Phoenix area caused a fatal crash due to distracted driving and speeding, leading to five deaths. This incident is reflective of the thousands of traffic crashes that result in around 41,000 deaths annually in the U.S. Some major causes of these crashes include distracted driving, speeding, and substance abuse. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2022 alone, over 3,300 people died due to distracted driving. Forbes Advisor analyzed the most dangerous cities for drivers, with Memphis, Detroit, and Albuquerque having the highest rates of fatal car crashes.

In Memphis, the average rate of fatal accidents is 25.96 per 100,000 residents, making it the most dangerous city for drivers. Texas cities like Dallas and Houston are also among the top 15 cities with the worst drivers. Distracted driving, drunk driving, and speeding are common factors in fatal car accidents. Despite a 3.6% decrease in traffic fatalities in 2023, overall motor vehicle fatalities have increased by about 25% in the past decade. The safety administration emphasized the risks of distracted driving, with more than 3,300 deaths and nearly 290,000 injuries caused by distracted drivers in 2022 alone. The Arizona truck driver involved in the deadly crash received a 22-year prison sentence, highlighting the consequences of distracted driving incidents. As traffic fatality rates fluctuate, efforts to curb distracted driving and improve road safety continue to be crucial.
