Former President Donald Trump has announced that he will vote against a ballot measure in Florida seeking to overturn the state’s six-week abortion ban, a decision that contradicts his previous openness to the amendment. Trump believes the six-week ban is too strict and has expressed his opposition to it, but also criticized the “ridiculous” option of allowing abortions up to the ninth month of pregnancy. The amendment to overturn the ban includes language protecting abortion rights up to viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health.
Trump’s position on the amendment, which he had not previously disclosed, came after initially suggesting he would vote in favor of it. His comments were met with criticism from anti-abortion advocates and Christian conservatives. Vice President Kamala Harris condemned Trump’s opposition to the abortion amendment, calling his stance extreme and harmful to women’s health care access.
Harris’ campaign has emphasized the importance of restoring abortion protections in response to Trump’s role in appointing Supreme Court justices that led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In addition to the abortion issue, Trump also expressed support for coverage of in vitro fertilization costs by insurance companies, a proposal that was criticized by Harris and her supporters. The Harris campaign plans to launch a bus tour to advocate for reproductive freedom and hold Trump accountable for his actions related to abortion rights.
