A recent study conducted by the Pacific Institute has revealed a significant increase in violence related to water resources in 2023, continuing a decade-long trend. The study documented 347 incidents in 2023, a stark rise from just 22 incidents recorded in 2000. This surge in water-based violence has been attributed to factors such as climate change, population growth, and extreme weather events like droughts and floods.
The findings were presented at Stockholm’s World Water Week, where experts discussed the need for policies that guarantee safe water access and sanitation for all. The study also highlighted the importance of enforcing international agreements over shared water resources and addressing the threats posed by extreme climate events.
Violent incidents over water were reported across all major regions in 2023, with conflicts in the Middle East, Southern Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa dominating the database. The study also noted that attacks on water systems accounted for half of the incidents, while disputes over access and control of water resources made up 39%.
To tackle water-based violence, the Pacific Institute recommends implementing resilient water policies, enforcing international laws to protect civilian infrastructure, and utilizing technology to efficiently manage water resources. By incorporating these strategies, the Institute believes that it is possible to reduce the risks of water-related conflicts and ensure equitable access to clean water for all populations.
