16-year-old Hussein recently shared a harrowing tale of abuse and neglect during his 10-month detention in Israeli facilities. Shot in the thigh by Israeli forces and denied proper medical attention, Hussein now limps, requires crutches to walk, and faces the prospect of joint implant surgery in the future. He is just one of hundreds of children who have been mistreated in Israeli detention, a fact highlighted by rights groups and UN agencies.
The abuse faced by Palestinian prisoners includes beatings, exposure to extreme cold, deprivation of food, sleep, water, and medical attention, as well as inadequate food rations and lack of access to basic supplies. More than 700 children have been arrested since October 7, with an estimated 250 still in Israeli detention.
Stories like Hussein’s and that of 18-year-old Ahmed Abu Naim shed light on the unimaginable conditions that Palestinian detainees endure daily. Both Hussein and Abu Naim recount tales of physical abuse, neglect, and unsanitary conditions during their time in custody.
As the international community continues to condemn the mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners, families like Hussein’s and Abu Naim’s are left to pick up the pieces and help their loved ones reintegrate into society. Despite the trauma they have faced, these young men express a desire for a better future – one free from the horrors of detention and filled with the opportunity to work and build a home.
