Several EU member states have announced their candidates for the upcoming European Commission, with Bulgaria proposing both a male and female candidate, former Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva and former Ecology Minister Julian Popov. Italy’s Raffaele Fitto, a seasoned politician from Puglia, has been put forward as the country’s EU commissioner. Denmark has nominated Dan Jørgensen, a social democrat with previous experience in the European Parliament. However, Belgium is facing political turmoil and has yet to elect a commissioner, with expectations leaning towards a male candidate despite the push for gender balance by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. So far, very few female candidates have been nominated for the position. The deadline for nominations was set for 30 August, and the selected candidates will form part of von der Leyen’s second team of EU commissioners. The nominations highlight the diverse political backgrounds and experiences of the candidates from different member states. The selection process for the EU commissioners will be closely watched as they take on key roles in shaping the future of the European Union.
