During her first solo campaign event in Virginia, Gwen Walz criticized Republican vice presidential nominee Senator JD Vance for his views on family. Vance had expressed discomfort with teachers who do not have biological children. Walz, who struggled with infertility and used fertility treatments to start a family with her husband Tim, spoke out against Vance’s comments, telling him to “mind his own business.” This comes after Vance accused his Democratic opponent of lying about using IVF to conceive their children, when in fact they were conceived through IUI, a less intense fertility treatment. Vice President Kamala Harris has also spoken out against Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, for their stance on women’s rights, specifically access to abortion, birth control, and fertility treatments. Trump recently announced that if elected, the government or insurance companies would pay for IVF treatments, possibly in an effort to appeal to women and suburban voters. Walz’s comments highlight the deeply personal nature of fertility issues and the importance of reproductive rights in political debates.
