A Brazilian judge has ordered the immediate suspension of social media platform X in the country after a court-imposed deadline for the company to identify a legal representative in Brazil expired. This decision comes amid an ongoing feud between Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk, which includes the freezing of the financial accounts of Musk’s satellite internet provider Starlink in Brazil. The suspension of X is in response to the company failing to comply with court orders, including paying fines of $3.28 million and nominating a legal representative in Brazil. Moraes ordered the telecommunications regulator to carry out the suspension and confirm it within 24 hours. He warned that individuals or companies attempting to access X through VPNs could face fines of up to $8,900 per day. Musk denounced the order as censorship and closed X’s offices in Brazil earlier this year, although the platform’s services remained available in the country. The Supreme Court had previously ordered X to block certain accounts linked to spreading distorted news and hate, leading to this latest development. In response to the freezing of Starlink’s bank accounts, the company, partially owned by Musk, has asked the court to suspend the decision.
