Melbourne Symphony Orchestra board commits to conducting an independent review following uproar over Gaza comments by musicians

An independent review of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s policies has been initiated following the controversial decision to cancel a performance by pianist Jayson Gillham after remarks he made about the killing of journalists in Gaza. The decision to cancel Gillham’s performance led to a vote of no confidence from the orchestra’s musicians towards senior management, citing ongoing concerns and a decline in workplace culture.

Gillham had dedicated a piece of music to journalists slain in Gaza during a concert, calling Israel’s actions targeted assassinations and war crimes. The MSO initially cited “a series of introductory remarks” made without approval as the reason for the cancellation, but later admitted to an error and expressed a desire to reschedule the concert.

The musicians’ letter to the board highlighted long-standing issues within the orchestra and the need for a full investigation into the cancellation of Gillham’s performance and overall leadership standards. The board responded by announcing an independent external review of their policies, procedures, and decision-making processes.

The controversy surrounding the cancellation also caused the Australian jazz funk band, the Cat Empire, to postpone their scheduled show out of solidarity with the MSO’s musicians. The band expressed support for the orchestra’s musicians and hoped for a resolution to the situation.

The MSO board emphasized the importance of transparency and best practices in their organization, stating that the review will help ensure their policies and processes are appropriate for their role within the community.
