Trump asserts his right to criticize Harris: Key points from press conference

Former President Donald Trump held a news conference at his New Jersey golf club where he acknowledged launching personal attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris, claiming they are justified. Trump criticized Harris and President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy and made personal insults against Harris, questioning her intelligence and calling her potential presidency terrible. He also used demeaning language towards immigrants in the United States and accused Harris of being involved in criminal cases against him, though there is no evidence to support this claim.

Many Republicans have advised Trump to focus on issues rather than personalities, as his attacks on Harris may be contributing to her lead in polls since Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race. The Harris campaign responded to Trump’s news conference by mocking his lies and delusions.

Trump also criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s economic record, particularly inflation and supply chain issues. He did not directly address Harris’s proposal for a federal ban on food price-gouging but instead criticized her position on fracking and accused her of wanting to implement price controls that would drive up costs. While Americans have faced rising prices, the 12-month inflation rate has fallen to 2.9%, the lowest level since 2021.

In addition to economic issues, Trump spoke about illegal border crossings, falsely claiming that nearly 100% of net job creation in the last year has gone to migrants and exaggerating the number of unauthorized immigrants in the country. He also falsely stated that Harris wants to give undocumented immigrants citizenship and access to free government healthcare, Medicare, and Social Security, which she has not called for.
