Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Adam Epstein has passed away at the age of 49 after battling a brain tumor. Known for his work on revivals of “Amadeus” and “The Crucible,” as well as adaptations of “The Wedding Singer” and “Cry-Baby,” Epstein died at Adventist Health hospital in Glendale. He was in the midst of hosting his podcast, “Dirty Moderate with Adam Epstein,” when he fell ill. His brother Brett Epstein described him as someone who lived a full life within his 49 years and had an infectious positivity about everything.
Epstein, born in Miami Beach, Florida, started his Broadway career in the late ’90s and is best known for producing the Tony-winning adaptation of John Waters’ “Hairspray.” The show had 13 Tony nominations and won eight, including “Best Musical.” Epstein also produced other hit shows such as “The Life” and “A View From the Bridge,” earning a total of 12 Tony Awards. He later shifted his focus to political commentary, creating a YouTube channel and hosting the “Dirty Moderate” podcast.
Epstein’s newest episode featured former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, and he had previously appeared on Michael Steele’s podcast. He leaves behind his brother, parents, sister, sister-in-law, and three nieces and nephew. A funeral service is set to be held in Florida, with donations to the UCLA Brain Cancer Research Center requested in lieu of flowers. Epstein’s death is a huge loss to the Broadway community and beyond, as he left a lasting impact on the industry with his work.
