Spotlight PA: Meet the Animator of Scavengers Reign

“Scavengers Reign,” an animated sci-fi series created by Pennsylvania-based animator Charles Huettner, has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for an Emmy award. The show was originally canceled by HBO Max, but found a new home on Netflix, attracting a new audience and sparking hopes for a possible second season on a different platform.

Huettner expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create the show and is proud of the Emmy nomination. He cited the inspiration for the show’s aesthetics from his upbringing in Pennsylvania, particularly the overgrown foliage on old farmland. The background art in the show reflects this inspiration.

Huettner attended Kutztown University and pursued a major in fine art drawing. He taught himself animation after becoming disillusioned with college, offering advice to others who may feel it’s too late to pursue their dreams. Huettner also mentioned his fondness for Pennsylvania, citing Devil’s Den at the Gettysburg National Military Park as a favorite place.

The show was worked on remotely, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing for a wider pool of artists to contribute to the project. Huettner mentioned that he occasionally travels to Los Angeles for work but prefers the Pennsylvania setting as his home. Overall, Huettner’s journey from self-taught animator to Emmy-nominated creator serves as an inspiring story for aspiring artists.
