Military secrets sold to China by Army intelligence analyst

Army intelligence analyst Korbein Schultz pleaded guilty to conspiring to sell military information to China. He was charged with disclosing national defense information, exporting defense articles without a license, and bribery of a public official. Schultz, who held top secret clearance, conspired with an individual in Hong Kong believed to be associated with the Chinese government to collect classified information on U.S. military weapons systems for money. FBI Executive Assistant Director Robert Wells emphasized the importance of safeguarding national security information from hostile foreign governments.

Schultz is set to be sentenced in January, facing a maximum 20-year prison sentence and $1 million fine for unlawful export of defense articles to China. He is required to surrender any property or money traceable to his crimes and is prohibited from profiting off them in the future.

Specific details of Schultz’s crimes include selling information about U.S. response to an invasion of Taiwan, U.S. troop presence in South Korea and the Philippines, and efforts to recruit a higher-ranking Army employee into his scheme. Information sold includes details on military helicopters, rocket systems, missile defense systems, and Chinese military tactics in exchange for $42,000.

Schultz’s actions were condemned by Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen for putting national security at risk to benefit personally. The FBI warned that China is aggressively targeting U.S. military personnel. Brig. Gen. Rhett R. Cox of the Army Counterintelligence Command criticized Schultz for betraying the trust placed in him by disclosing sensitive information to a foreign nation.
