Israel-Gaza Conflict Update: Gaza Health Ministry Reports Over 40,000 Palestinian Casualties Since October 7th

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has reached a grim milestone, with the death toll surpassing 40,000 since the start of Israel’s military offensive last year. The majority of those killed and injured are civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Families are struggling to bury their dead, with morgues and cemeteries full and limited resources available for proper burial.

Meanwhile, negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza continue, with Israel sending a delegation to talks in Doha, Qatar. Hamas has expressed its commitment to the negotiation process and urged mediators to secure Israel’s commitment to a proposal agreed upon in early July.

The toll of the conflict is also felt beyond Gaza, with a former Palestinian prisoner released during a ceasefire in November killed in an Israeli air strike in the West Bank. Additionally, an Iranian military adviser from the Revolutionary Guard’s aerospace force has died from injuries sustained in Syria, where both the US and Israel have carried out strikes against Iran-aligned factions.

The conflict has also had repercussions in other parts of the world, with New York’s Columbia University president resigning amid scrutiny over her handling of demonstrations related to the Israel-Hamas war. In Australia, opposition leader Peter Dutton faced backlash for calling to stop the arrival of refugees from Gaza, with an independent politician telling him to “stop being racist” during a heated exchange in parliament.
