Three prisoners were killed and nine others injured in a maximum-security prison brawl at Ely State Prison in Nevada. Among the dead was Zackaria Luz, a white supremacist gang leader serving time for racketeering and forgery charges. The identity of the other two deceased prisoners was not released as of Friday pending next of kin notification. Another inmate, Connor Brown, was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with a deadly weapon. The fight was reportedly gang-related, according to Governor Joe Lombardo’s office. The incident is still under investigation, and it is unclear what weapons were used or how the inmates were killed. Several injured prisoners were flown to hospitals for treatment. The Aryan Warriors gang, to which Luz belonged, had operatives in both the prison system and the Las Vegas community. The prison, which opened in 1989, has a maximum capacity of 1,183 inmates. The White Pine County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of the fight, where they found three inmates dead and multiple injured prisoners needing medical attention. The case remains under investigation, and officials have not disclosed further details about the incident.
