Gender inequality continues to be a pressing issue in the European Parliament, especially in committees handling serious matters like foreign affairs and economics. According to Jéromine Andolfatto from the European Women’s Lobby, men still hold the majority in key portfolios, with only a small number of women being represented. The recent elections have seen a decrease in the number of female MEPs, further emphasizing the need for gender equality in leadership roles.
Andolfatto points out that committees like the Foreign Affairs Committee, Budget Committee, and Economy Committee have disproportionately low female representation. Even though the rise of the extreme right in the European Parliament may not directly influence this gender gap, Andolfatto is concerned that women from these parties may not advocate for women’s rights.
The European Women’s Lobby is pushing for gender parity in important decision-making bodies like the College of Commissioners, and they have been successful in getting legislation passed to address gender-based violence. They are also advocating for a dedicated budget for women’s rights and better conditions for tenders and budget allocations.
In the face of these challenges, Andolfatto is determined to identify allies who will support them in their fight for gender equality in the European Parliament. As President Ursula von der Leyen also supports the goal of gender parity, there is hope for progress in promoting women’s rights within the EU.
