The Fortson family is reeling from the loss of two young family members within months of each other. After U.S. Air Force senior airman Roger Fortson was fatally shot by a Florida deputy in May, his 16-year-old brother, Andre Fortson, was killed in a shooting in Georgia. The incident occurred at Summit Hill Apartments in DeKalb County, where Andre was found with gunshot wounds in a breezeway. The suspected shooter, 20-year-old Quintavious Zellner, was charged with aggravated assault after police determined that two groups were shooting at each other for unknown reasons. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing cars flee the scene, leaving Andre behind. A neighbor attempted to save him through CPR, but sadly he did not survive.
The family is demanding justice for both Roger and Andre, with Roger’s mother calling for the deputy involved in her son’s shooting to be held accountable. The sheriff’s office found that the deputy’s use of force was not reasonable and violated agency policy. As the family mourns the loss of another young member, civil rights attorney Ben Crump has requested privacy and space during this difficult time. The community and media have also been asked to respect the family’s need for privacy as they grieve the devastating losses of Roger and Andre Fortson.
