The United Nations reports that 86 percent of the besieged Gaza Strip is now under Israeli evacuation orders, leading to the displacement of thousands of Palestinians. The situation has been described as dire, with many families left with nothing and struggling to find a safe haven. Schools turned into shelters for the displaced have also been targeted in the ongoing conflict.
The Israeli military has been accused of carrying out relentless attacks, resulting in the deaths of 33 Palestinians on Monday alone. The total death toll since October is at 39,363, with thousands more wounded. Additionally, the Ministry of Health in Gaza has declared it a “polio endemic area”, posing a serious health threat to residents.
The World Health Organization has confirmed the spread of the polio virus in Gaza and is sending over one million polio vaccines to prevent further infections. The dire living conditions in Gaza, including a lack of hygiene and sanitation, have raised concerns about the potential spread of diseases.
Amidst the escalating violence, Israel and Hamas have failed to make progress in reaching a ceasefire agreement. Both sides have traded blame over the lack of a resolution, with Hamas accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of adding new conditions to a truce proposal. Netanyahu, however, denies making any changes and accuses Hamas of insisting on numerous alterations.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with civilians facing ongoing attacks, displacement, and now the threat of a public health crisis. International efforts are underway to provide aid and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
