The 314 Action Fund, a science-focused group, is recommending Mark Kelly for the vice-presidential nomination. Kelly, an engineer and former astronaut, is being considered by Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign as a possible running mate. The organization praised Kelly for his ability to solve problems, win tough elections, and make informed public policy decisions using science and data.
The 314 Action Fund plans to release an ad supporting Kelly’s candidacy in battleground markets and has previously spent $3 million to “draft” him into the 2020 Senate race. The Arizona Democratic Party has also endorsed Kelly for the vice-presidential slot. However, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is facing pushback from a group called “No Genocide Josh,” which is critical of his stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The group calls for a VP nominee who supports workers’ rights, immigrants, public education, and reproductive healthcare. They argue that to win the trust of working-class, progressive, and young voters, Harris must commit to an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Israel’s conflict with Hamas. The group criticizes Shapiro for his stance on the conflict and warns that a VP nominee who does not align with progressive values risks losing support from millions of voters.
