Celebrity app ‘Cameo’ resolves legal dispute with Pennsylvania and other states

Baron Inc., the owner of the popular celebrity app Cameo, has settled a lawsuit with 30 states, including Pennsylvania, over issues related to paid endorsements. The settlement includes an agreement for Cameo to develop a comprehensive system to comply with state consumer protection laws and federal endorsement disclosure requirements. This initiative comes after Cameo failed to inform consumers that videos promoting products were paid endorsements, violating FTC regulations and consumer protection laws in multiple states. As a result, people who viewed videos on Cameo from celebrities were misled into thinking they were genuine reviews, when in fact they were paid endorsements.

Attorney General Michelle Henry commended Cameo for making necessary changes to ensure a more transparent consumer experience. The app allows users to purchase personalized videos from celebrities and prominent figures, as well as allows businesses to pay celebrities to endorse their products. The settlement was led by Texas and joined by various other states, including Florida, Illinois, New York, and more.

Consumers who may be owed money over false State College parking ‘tickets’ are urged to stay informed with the latest news by downloading the WTAJ app for Apple and Android devices. Cameo’s settlement is seen as a step in the right direction to protect consumers and ensure transparency in paid endorsements in the digital age.
