Watchdog finds Bill Barr breached DOJ policy by pressuring Pennsylvania over ballot statement

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has been found to have improperly urged a Pennsylvania prosecutor to make public statements about concerns over election security in the 2020 race. According to a report from the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General, Barr and U.S. Attorney David Freed violated department policy by discussing an investigation publicly and providing selective details about mail-in ballots found in a dumpster in Luzerne County, Pa.

The investigation concluded that the discovered ballots were accidentally discarded by a poorly trained election employee with mental disabilities, and all of them contained votes for former President Trump. However, no charges were filed related to the incident. Despite this, Barr’s sharing of details with Trump, who then spoke about the case publicly, drew additional scrutiny.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz expressed concerns about Barr’s actions but did not accuse him of misconduct. The report recommends that the Justice Department revise its policies on sharing information with the White House and calls for an investigation by the Office of Special Counsel to determine if Barr or Freed’s actions violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from making political statements.

This report sheds light on the handling of sensitive information by top Justice Department officials during the 2020 election and raises questions about the influence of politics on government investigations. It underscores the importance of upholding department policies and ethics standards to maintain transparency and integrity in the justice system.
